An incredible long time ago now. 126 years old. We have seen an entire generation of change since her death, and what seems like 3 generations since we were born. But they usually measure a generation by about 33 years, so 2 generations since our births. If Grandma saw what was going on today and could comment on it, she would probably say "Yuch!" hahahahaha.

 Disappointing to me is the fact Grandma's house was not passed on to our generation. It would have been expensive to remodel like they did some 18 years ago, but I like the big porch and the shade under the roof of the porch. It would have been a place to go and hide from the world and play some golf there now. Bu with all the new construction on the north side of Clare, MI and a about a mile north of there Jay's Sporting Goods at Surrey Rd and Old 27 corner it's ugly to me and not the same. So my kids missed out on that family tradition of every other weekend up north. Of course the biggest draw was not the place itself but the fact that Grandma was always there armed and ready with love and cookies and Sunday morning breakfasts.

Memorial Day Weekend. You know this was always a big weekend for spending time with Grandma and the Mickles, and earlier on, also the Hoovers. Often we would go up to Clare pick up Grandma, and continue to Oscoda, or all meet in Clare and stay up there two nights, come home Monday afternoon like everyone else. On the way home be entertained by the typical accident at M27 and some major east west road   I can’t remember the name of. They have  a bridge over that former corner where even installing a traffic light did not help. I think they put in that bridge in the early 90’s. Naturally the men would disappear on a golf course. 1968: Fifty years ago and theBig California Trip.

It has been fifty years since 1968, a pivotal year in history, and in my life the. I was 12 about to go into junior high 7th grade. Back the we did not have any graduation or celebration, you just went. But in the romantic sense it was the first phase of childhood ending. There should have been something. But it really wasn't done other than a trip to the Detroit Zoo with the 6th grade class. Today they take the fifth graders (common last grade of elementary school  now) and let go of balloons...very dramatic, as a symbol of letting go of your childhood an into teenager years. I think it is more traumatic for the parents than the kids. The parents know as the children get bigger they will cost more! And hormones? Well as the Rolling Stones sang, "Here's comes your 19th nervous breakdown..." But our parents came through with a trip to California for 3 weeks. We had a fold out camper hitched to the car. But we also would stay in a motel or two when needed for showers ...
